Do You Have Enough Work Credits To Qualify For Social Security Disability Benefits In Florida?

Form2

When an injury or illness causes long-term disabilities in Florida, Social Security disability benefits help offset lost earnings. However, they are not available to everyone. One requirement is that you must have earned the required work credits.

Our experienced Jacksonville Social Security disability lawyer has extensive experience helping clients navigate claims. Find out how work credits work and what to do if you are not sure where you stand.

What Social Security Disability Work Credits Are and How You Earn Them

Think of work credits as a record of the years you paid into the Social Security system through your payroll taxes. Every year you work and pay Social Security taxes, you accumulate credits based on what you earned. Here’s how it works:

  • In 2026, you earn one work credit for every $1,890 in covered wages or self-employment income, with a maximum of four credits per year.
  • The number of credits you need depends on your age when your disability begins.
  • If you are under age 24, you need 6 credits earned in the three years before your disability began.
  • If you are between 24 and 30, you need credits for half the time between age 21 and when you became disabled.
  • If you are age 31 or older, you generally need 40 total credits, with at least 20 of them earned in the 10 years before your disability.

Working for many years in the past is not enough. If you spent several years out of the workforce and have not earned 20 credits in the last decade, you may not qualify for benefits, no matter how severe your condition is.

What Happens if You Do Not Have Enough Social Security Disability Credits?

Running short on work credits doesn’t mean you’re out of options, but it does change your situation. If your disability began before you had accumulated enough credits, or if you left the workforce years ago, the SSA may deny your claim before even reviewing your medical evidence.

Fortunately, there are some simple steps Florida residents can take to protect both their rights and eligibility. These include:

  • Check your work credit total and Date Last Insured by logging into your My Social Security account.
  • File your disability claim as soon as your condition prevents you from working.
  • Include any self-employment income on which you paid Social Security taxes, since it counts toward credits.
  • Get professional legal help if you are unsure whether you have enough recent credits or if the SSA denies your claim.

Being denied benefits can come as a shock, but many of these claims are approved on appeal.
